West McDonald, VP of Business Development at Print Audit, sees a change coming in the MPS (Managed Print Services) market and warns that dealers had better be ready for it. “There is an all-out war for pages,” he wrote in this recent blog post. “Margins on cost-per-page contracts are under pressure. What is a Managed Print provider to do? Change the game by billing by seat instead of by page.”

The Obama Administration recently issued Executive Order 13693, which outlines federal guidelines for using sustainable building materials, alternative energy sources, eco-friendly cars and purchasing decisions, among others. The executive order promotes the purchase of ENERGY STAR-qualified products, “recycled content products designated by EPA” and products designated as “BioPreferred and biobased” by the US Department of Agriculture. It also recommends reducing copier and printing paper use, and acquiring uncoated printing and writing paper containing at least 30 percent postconsumer recycled content or higher. However, it fails to mention the Green Electronics Council’s EPEAT (Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool) environmental purchasing guidelines.

While there is no shortage of administrator-focused utilities that tally up usage for a group or fleet of devices, this handy tool is aimed squarely at end users in the organization—users who typically want to support “green” and cost-cutting initiatives, but who may need a reminder from time to time. The tool also provides a desktop dashboard that offers sustainability tips, suggestions to help minimize printing and a running monthly tally of paper saved thus far.

For companies looking for a way to offset their high paper consumption, the company PrintReleaf has a solution. PrintReleaf works with a company’s existing print management software to measure its paper consumption per device in real time. The PrintReleaf Exchange (PRX) software then determines the number of trees that were sacrificed for that paper volume and then sends that information to various reforestation projects around the globe so that the number can be offset with new tree growth.

Last month, BLI analysts attended Ricoh’s 2015 dealer show in Las Vegas. Living up to the event’s theme of Collaborate.Succeed, Ricoh senior executives were very open with dealers, going so far as to having an open question and answer forum during the general session. It shows how far Ricoh has come in the last few years in improving its relationship with dealers, who now make up over 37 percent of the company’s total sales.
