Buyers Lab Awards Summer 2011 “Picks” to Three Nuance Document Imaging Solutions
Hackensack, NJ., July 19, 2011 – Buyers Laboratory Inc. (BLI), the world’s leading independent evaluator of document imaging hardware and software, today announced its prestigious Summer 2011 “Pick” winners honoring the top-performing solutions evaluated in BLI's lab during the previous six months. Among the winners are three products from the Nuance Document Imaging division of Nuance Communications, Inc. Nuance eCopy ShareScan 5 has been selected as “Outstanding Document Capture/Routing Solution,” Nuance eCopy PDF Pro Office 5 has been named “Outstanding PDF Creation Solution” and Nuance OmniPage 18 Professional has been honored as “Outstanding OCR Solution” by the editors of BLI.
“With its growing stable of class-leading applications and cutting-edge technologies, Nuance Communications is proving to be a powerhouse in the document imaging solutions arena,” said Jamie Bsales, senior product editor for solutions at BLI. “These ‘Pick’ winners prove the point, delivering best-of-breed functionality and usability to help knowledge workers interact with paper and electronic documents more effectively and efficiently.”
In BLI’s lab tests, eCopy ShareScan 5 distinguished itself as a significant upgrade that delivers a range of new features and enhancements—effectively making what was already one of the most impressive document capture and routing platforms even better. eCopy ShareScan 5 lets almost any networked MFP serve as the entry point for paper documents to merge into an organization’s digital workflow, allowing end users to easily capture documents and integrate them into more than 100 leading business applications. BLI technicians were particularly impressed with the latest version’s new features such as Nuance’s Personalized Scanning innovation, which allows scanning menus to be tailored to specific individuals or workgroups after they log in at the MFP, further streamlining daily chores. Another innovation comes courtesy of Nuance’s OCR (optical character recognition) engine, which allows users to have the program automatically redact (black out) or highlight particular text strings in a captured document. eCopy ShareScan 5 is available in three editions—eCopy ShareScan 5 Suite, eCopy ShareScan 5 Office and eCopy ShareScan 5 Elements—and the BLI “Pick” award honors all three.
BLI editors also awarded a Summer “Pick” to Nuance eCopy PDF Pro Office 5. This enterprise-class PDF-creation solution is designed for organizations that depend on PDF files to communicate, share information or archive business documents. The software can be used not only to create PDF, searchable PDF and PDF/A files, but also to convert static PDFs into editable, searchable files in popular file formats including WordPerfect and Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. BLI technicians found the application easy to set up and use, so for the majority of users no IT training will be required. Moreover, eCopy PDF Pro Office gives businesses a full-featured PDF solution that costs much less than the leading alternative.
BLI editors also recognized the latest version of Nuance’s unparalleled optical character recognition package, Nuance OmniPage Professional 18, as Outstanding OCR Solution. This document-conversion solution is designed to help businesses make scanned documents and digital image files text-searchable to streamline workflow processes, allowing end users to capture, recognize and send searchable documents all from one solution. The standout feature in the new version is its ability to perform OCR on documents that reside in popular “cloud” repositories. OmniPage offers direct connections to Evernote and Dropbox, and allows users to add additional connections via the included Nuance Cloud Connect solution. As with the previous version, OmniPage also delivered excellent overall speed and accuracy performance in BLI’s tests.
“Winning three Pick Awards from Buyers Lab in a competitive evaluation is strong validation for the leadership position of Nuance document imaging and conversion solutions,” said Robert Weideman, senior vice president and general manager of the Nuance Document Imaging Division. “It also demonstrates the innovation and business value across our broad product portfolio we deliver to customers.”

Twice a year with its “Pick” awards, BLI gives special recognition to the hardware and software products that provided the most outstanding performances in BLI’s unique evaluations. Software solutions undergo an in-depth hands-on review that focuses on key attributes for a solution’s target market and compares how well the product stacks up against leading competitors. “Pick” winners rise above the competition in key areas such as value, feature set, ease of use, ease of administration, hardware compatibility, software integration, security and support. Software solutions earn an overall rating based on a five-star scale, and “Pick” contenders are culled from those that earn the highest ratings. Consequently, a BLI “Pick” is a hard-earned award that buyers and IT directors can trust to better guide them in their acquisition decisions.
In addition to the testing of office equipment for its subscribers, Buyers Lab provides consulting services to buyers and a vast array of confidential for-hire private testing services that include document imaging device beta and pre-launch testing, performance certification testing, consumables testing (such as toner, ink and photoconductors), software and solutions and print media testing (including virgin and recycled papers).
