BLI AWARDS WIDE-FORMAT “PICKS” TO OCÉ AND CANON

December 1, 2008 - Hackensack (NJ) – Buyers Laboratory Inc. (BLI), the world’s leading independent tester of document imaging products, today announced its prestigious Fall 2008 “Pick” awards in the wide-format category, with honors going to Océ and Canon. BLI’s “Picks” are presented semi-annually to the products that perform the best in their respective categories throughout BLI’s in-depth lab testing. During the test, BLI evaluates all critical performance areas, including reliability, image quality, productivity, ease of use, paper handling, print drivers and administrative utilities, among others. Wide-format devices are also evaluated for their color management. Further, BLI assesses the ease of job storage and retrieval, as well as media handling and ease of assembly.

The Fall 2008 Wide-Format “Pick” winners are:

Océ Wide Format Printing Systems
Océ TDS700 w/optional TC4 Scan System
Outstanding Wide-Format Monochrome MFP

Canon, Inc.
Canon imagePROGRAF iPF820
Outstanding Wide-Format Color Inkjet Multipurpose Printer

Océ’s TDS700 W/Optional TC4 Scan System Offer Incomparable Ease Of Use
An exceptional choice for mid-volume technical, engineering and architectural monochrome print applications, BLI’s “Pick” for “Outstanding Wide-Format Monochrome MFP” is the 36-inch Océ TDS700 printer configured with the optional Océ TC4 scanner. Delivering near-flawless reliability and impressive ease of use, “this Océ wide-format printer was obviously designed with the end user in mind,” said Joe Tischner, BLI’s wide-format test specialist. “Innovative features like the roll-loading adapters and roll retainers make loading heavy paper rolls quite a bit easier than on competitive models.” Also noteworthy is the maneuverability of both the printer and scanner control panels, which swivel and support Section 508 compliance.

This versatile printer is available in numerous configurations. Accommodating nearly 12,000 square feet of paper in its six-roll configuration, the Océ TDS700 is the highest-capacity unit tested by BLI and enables users to produce long unattended print runs, especially when configured with Océ’s optional double-decker stacker.
Enhanced copy and scan functionality is provided by Océ’s highly productive TC4 color scanner, which was also given high marks for speed, image quality and overall ease of use.

“This outstanding rating from BLI reinforces the message that the Océ TDS700 is the most versatile large format print/copy/scan system available today,” said Sal Sheikh, vice president, marketing, Wide Format Printing Division of Océ North America. “It also serves as a testament to Océ's commitment to providing customers with flexible, innovative printing solutions designed to meet the most demanding large format document workflow needs.”
Canon imagePROGRAF Equally Suited To Technical And Graphic Arts Uses
Demonstrating that it can capably satisfy the printing needs of not only the technical marketplace, but graphic arts print professionals as well, the Canon imagePROGRAF iPF820 has been awarded BLI’s Fall 2008 “Pick” for “Outstanding Wide-Format Color Inkjet Multipurpose Printer.” “This device displayed exceptional print quality across a wide-range of applications, from maps and architectural plans printed on standard bond paper to high-quality photographs printed on Canon’s premium photo papers,” said BLI European Lab and Research Manager David Sweetnam. Sweetnam cited the dual-roll model’s ability to quickly switch between paper types, which contributed to the unit’s excellent productivity rating. In addition to a perfect reliability performance, this 44-inch unit also offers excellent paper handling, accommodating both sheet- and roll-media, as well as very good ease of use. The Canon imagePROGRAF iPF820’s print driver was also commended for numerous features, including the Free Layout function and borderless printing, along with Canon’s Print Plug-In for Microsoft Word.

"The imagePROGRAF iPF820 is an example of Canon's leading technology and tradition for high quality, outstanding colors and exceptional print speeds," said Yuichi Miyano, European marketing director for Canon's Large Format Solutions. "This award from BLI emphasizes its versatility as a graphic arts and CAD printer, making it an ideal product for the print for pay, reprographics and CAD markets."
